Sunday News Shows, Halloween, 2010

Halloween is supposed to be a scary day, and this year it is really scary as most of the Washington D.C. pundits claim that the republicans are going to take over the U.S. House of Representatives, and maybe the senate. It is especially ironic that the public seems to be on the verge of rewarding the republicans for doing everything they can to not work with Obama on anything, and then running on the fact that nothing is getting done.

The Sunday News shows today were pretty predictable in the context of what the media as a whole is saying. Even Colby King was backpedalling on his predictions that the democrats' losses would be less than what the rest of the media was saying.

A few specific things that I heard caught my attention. On Wall Street Week in Review, Maria Bartiromo used the term "Obamacare" in a conversation with a Tea Party dude who was pretty outrageous. The fact that this dude used the term "Obamacare" which is the basis of the republican campaign this election, isn't surprising. That Bartiromo repeated it shows her bias. Of course, she shows that all the time, with her repeated diatribes against any tax increases on the rich, and other statements she makes which show she has absolutely no understanding of what working class families have to face. I have a negative view of Bartiromo as a selfish, spoiled rich person.

McLaughlin used the term Obamacare too, but at least caught himself and said that he shouldn't be using that term. But it does stain their opinions, because this is clearly, without a doubt, a politically poisonous, partisan term to describe the health care bill.

I was really disappointed with Bill Goodwin's interview with Al Cross on KET. The low point was their seemingly sexist brush off of the incident where the Move-On woman was pushed down onto the ground and a very large male walks up and puts his put on her head and puts a little bit of pressure on her head. It was a scary moment, because the woman was defenseless and if the guy had put a lot of pressure on his foot, he could have injured her badly.

Goodwin said that the reaction was "overblown." Oh really? So some level of violence by private citizens against other private citizens is ok in politics? What's next, armed conflict? Cross's response was basically to agree with Goodwin. They need to rethink this.

To the Contrary had a great discussion of the issue of Anita Hill, Clarence Thomas, and Thomas' wife leaving the now infamous voice main on Hill's phone a couple weeks ago asking for an apology for Hill's testimony. Unfortunately, for the Thomases, since this all blew up in the news, one of Thomas' old girlfriends, who is now a retired judge, has publicly come forward to back up Hill's testimony, making statements that appear to point to the fact that Thomas lied under oath in his Senate confirmation hearing. Bonnie Erbe actually stated this in the show, and brought up the issue of impeachment. Good for them. It should be brought up. This is one more example of the republican hypocricy.

Other than this, the news shows were somewhat predictable. We'll see if the Washington pundits are right. If they are, and it is a republican blowout, then PT Barnum was right - there is a sucker born every minute!
