Flooded Ohio River from Tower Rock, Shawnee National Forest
This is a picture from the top of Tower Rock, just north of Elizabethtown, Illinois, on Friday, March 22,2008 - looking north up the Ohio River. Tower Rock is a Shawnee National Forest recreation area, in Hardin County, Illinois. Tower Rock is a cliff which rises above the Ohio River. There is a trail head which is close to the river shore, although when the river is low it seems far below. In this case, we had to drive through backwater to get to the trailhead, and the water wasn't that far beneath the trailhead. We climbed to the top of the Tower Rock and watched a 15 barge fully loaded coal tow work it's way upstream. It was AEP tow, and the fact that they were fighting that current says something about the stability of our energy supplies. If you look at the photo you can see the tow just starting to become visible to the right of the island that is across from Elizabethtown. I don't know the island's name, but you can bet it has one. The Ohio is a magnificent force of nature that I never tire of seeing or being near.
