Sunday News Shows

It wasn't a completely boring day in the news show world, but it wasn't the most interesting either. The most common topics were the Wikileaks posting of 10s of thousands of pages of so-called "classified" documents about the war in Afghanistan. The mainstream pundits are keeping more than an arms length from this. For the most part, the leak has been called "irresponsible," "harmful," and potentially "life-threatening" for some Afghans and Pakistanis who have been "co-operating" with the U.S.

While I don't know much about Wikileaks, and have never communicated with or spoken to or met Julian Assuage, I'm not so quick to condemn. The world suffers under government secrecy, and exposing governmental actions is usually in the public interest. That is why it is disappointing to hear these mainstream "liberal" pundits saying how horrible it is that Wikileaks published the documents.

There was a lot of discussion about Obama and his trip to Michigan and about how he has to use the bully pulpit of the presidency more to his advantage. I have to agree. But I also have to have to agree with one of the women, pundits, from Inside Washington, who said that Obama's PR staff has failed him, and the proof is how his poll numbers keep going down, regardless of the fact that he has gotten a lot done as president. Obama seems to be surrounded by amateurs and non professionals in how the working class and middle class feel toward him.

I think the talk about Chelsea Clinton's wedding was over the top. That's a private affair and shouldn't even have gotten much more than a mention in the mainstream press. So why are all the talk shows reporting on Clinton's wedding? It's rude, classist, and inappropiate for news casts, especially ones where the network is only giving a half hour to report the news of the world.

The pundits are still talking about a significant democratic party loss in the elections in November. I still think that there will not be a shift in majorities, and that the democrats will do better. We'll see. A lot does depend on the economy, but that is many months away. But my guess is still that Dems will do better than predicted by a lot of these pundits.
